The study visa allows to entry in Italy to foreigners who want study, follow university courses or professional training at an accredited or other qualified schools. In addition, the study visa is issued, for the time required, to foreigners who after his degree from an Italian university, must take exams for practice certification. The visa must be requested at the Italian Consulate or Embassy in the residence country of the foreigner. The visa is issued within 90 days and has a duration equal to the course that foreigner wish to follow, but no more one year later.

The residence permit for study
Within 8 working days from the arrival in Italy, the foreign citizen must go to the Police Authority of the place where he intends to establish residence to apply for residence permit for study. The permit shall be issued within 20 days and will have a duration equal to the entry visa. With the residence permit for study it is possible to work like an employee, for a period not longer than 20 hours for week, up to a maximum of 1040 hours for year (Art. 14 co.4 DPR 394/99 (Italian only).
Documents for residence permit for study:
- Residence application form;
- Passport or equivalent travel document and a copy of it;
- 4 passport-size photographs;
- 1 revenue stamp of €10,33;
- Visa and its copy;
- Certificate of enrollment in chosen study curse;
- Certificate attesting the insurance health coverage or the registration in the National Health System;
- Documents about housing solution;
- Documents that prove that you have financial means to subsistence for the duration of stay.
The residence permit for study is not renewable beyond the duration of the course in which the foreign student is enrolled.
The conversion of a residence permit for study
The residence permit for study may be converted before its deadline in a residence permit for work, after obtaining of no impediment by the Provincial Department of Labor Art. 14 co.5 DPR 394/99 (Italian only).
