Non-European Union Citizens

Necessary Papers

Foreigners wishing to enter Spanish territory must be:

  • In possession of a passport or valid travel document proving their identity.
  • Must also submit documents supporting the purpose and conditions of entry and residence, and prove sufficient financial means for the time you intend to stay in Spain.
  • In some cases a Visa will be required.

 

The documents they are required to present will vary according to the motive of the trip. You can check these on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

  • Residence less than three months

    Short stay is authorized to stay in Spanish territory for a period not exceeding 90 days per semester from the date of first entry.
    At the time that this period is over, if your desire is to stay in Spain, you will need to obtain an extension of stay or residence permit.
    Extension of stay
    A foreigner who has entered Spain with the purpose of not working nor staying, except he has a Visa for job search and he is in the period of stay, it is possible for him to request an extension of short stay.
    In the case of entering with visa, if its duration is less than 3 months it is possible to make the stay longer not exceeding 3 months in a period of 6.
    In the case of entering without visa, when the circumstances of a humanitarian nature, family, health care, public interest, or other exceptional circumstances which it is justify, the foreigner will be allowed to stay in Spain beyond 3 months.
    The request must be made personally by the foreigner or his legal representative in the case of a minor, on the official EX-00 (it is available in the website: Spanish Ministry of Internal Affairs) with the following documents:
    • Original and copy of the passport or travel document valid for more than the extension of stay requested.
    • Accreditation of the reason given for the application.
    • Sufficient proof that you have enough financial means for the request to stay longer.
    • A travel assistance insurance with the same coverage as it is required for the visa application of short stay.
    • The guarantees of returning to the country of origin.
  • Residence more than three months

    A temporary residence is considered, when a foreigner is authorized to remain in Spain for a period of more than 90 days and less than 5 years.
    • No-profit Temporary Residence: Residencia temporal no lucrativa. The document required: modelo oficial (EX-01)
    • Temporary residence for family reunion: Residencia temporal por reagrupación familar. The document required: modelo oficial (EX-02)
    • Temporary residence except for the work permit: Residencia temporal con excepción de la autorización de trabajo. The document required: modelo oficial (EX-09)
    • Excepcional temporary residence: Residencia temporal por circunstancias excepcionales. The document required: modelo oficial (EX-10)
    • Temporary residence of foreign victims. The document required: modelo oficial (EX-10).
