Spain is a developed country that has been progressing economically since the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936) when its economy was devastated.
Spain is member of the European Union since 1986 and adopted the Euro in 1999. Moreover it is also part of the United Nations, EMU, NATO, OECD, and WTO.
Although Spain was often described as a European success story, nowadays Spain faces a huge economic financial crisis, struggling to reduce the high rate of unemployment (25%) and the governments deficit. In order to achieve that, Spain is undertaking several reforms at the moment.

Spains economic structure is principally dominated by its service sector, due to the tourism industry, that it is one of the largest in the world, next only to France and the USA. The industry is also an important part of the economy, representing almost 30% of the GDP. In recent years, the agriculture sector has been lagging substantially.
Despite this, Spain continues to be Europes biggest cultivator of oranges, strawberries and lemon and the worlds largest producer of olive oil.
