According to the point 17 of the law on Medical Treatment the health care services financed by the state may be received by the following people:
- The citizens of Latvia
- Non-citizens of Latvia
- Citizens of the EU/EEA/the Switzerland Confederation who stay in Latvia due to employment or as self-employed individuals, as well as their family members
- Foreigners with the permit for permanent residence in Latvia
- Fugitives and individuals with the alternative status
- Persons under arrest/in imprisonmentNevertheless, one must bear in mind that although the medical care is free of charge, still one has to pay definite amounts for different services.
A person could also apply for a comprehensive health care insurance, which is offered by numerous insurance companies and covers fully or partly (depending on insurance program and payment) “payable” services. Some of these insurance companies offer health care insurance programs to the organizations; the organizations in their turn provide with this insurance their employees. Contact your prospective employer concerning the possibility to join such a comprehensive insurance during your stay in Latvia.
