Types of Visas

Types of Visas to enter Latvia

If a person is a citizen of the European Union, member states of the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation he/she may enter the territory of Latvia and enjoy his/her stay there for up to 90 days within a six-monthperiod, counting from the day of entry without a visa. All other individuals do need a visa to entry as well as to stay in the territory of Latvia.

After joining the Schengen Treaty Latvia issues visas that are valid only in Latvia (Latvian national long term visa) or in Latvia and other Schengen countries (Schengen visa). There are different types of visas (single, double, multiple-entry visa) as well as visa categories:

  • A – airport transit visa (Schengen visa), enables to cross the airport transit zone of a Schengen member state respectively once, two or several times (find out who needs the visa of A category here).
  • C – short-stay visa (Schengen visa), enables an individual to enter once, two or several times, transit or stay (depending on the time indicated on a visa) in the territory of Latvia. It can be a united visa (valid in all Schengen countries) as well as a visa with a limited territorial validity. The short-stay visa allows staying in the territory of the Schengen countries for maximum 90 days within a six-month period, counting form the day of entry.
  • D – long-stay visa (Latvian national visa) enables an individual to enter and stay in Latvia once, two or several times for the period exceeding 90 days within a six-month period counting from the day of entry.
