What is a Residence Visa?

It allows the stay for a 4 month period in order to lodge residence.

What are the documents needed to apply for a Residence Visa?

1. Application in correct form;
2. Valid travel document (+ 3 months after the intended date of departure);
3. Two identical photographs, passport size, in white plain background with a good quality;
4. Ticket that assures the return (except: residence visas for family reunification, researching or teaching in a higher education institution, and highly skilled labour;
5. Travel medical insurance that covers any expenses which might arise, including urgent medical attention and repatriation;
6. Authorisation of access to the Portuguese criminal record by the Aliens and Border Service (SEF – Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras);
7. Criminal record certificate from the country of origin or from the country where the applicant lives for more than a year;
8. Documents related to accommodation;
9. Documents proving that the applicant possesses sufficient income(the proof of the daily value 40 Euros in cash, “Travelers checks” or internationally accepted credit cards);
10. Minors shall present an authorization signed by a person exercising permanent or temporary parental authority or by a legal guardian.

The Residence Visa is valid: (specific documents)

A) For the pursuit of scientific research, teaching activity in higher education institution and highly qualified activity:
1. Employment contract;
2. Contract of service or scholarship.

Note: Research Centres, Institutions of Higher Education or other entities, public or private, that receive highly qualified activities, they can send the obligatory documents to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

B) For study, student exchange, professional internship or volunteering
In case of study and student exchange:
1. Acceptance document of the school;
2. Documentary proof of its acceptance by the family or by a host family, or
3. Written proof of accommodation;

Note: Under paragraph 5 of Art.61 of the Law 23/07 of 04/07, was published the Decree No. 1079/07 fixing the age between 14 and 21 years as a prerequisite for the requesting of residency visas for study in secondary.

In case of an internship:
1. A document issued by a company or organization specialized in vocational training;
2. Internship Program;
3. Contract training;
4. Time of the stage.

In case of volunteering:
1. A document certifying that has been admitted in an organization, officially recognised in Portugal for volunteering programs.

C) For higher education mobility programs:
1. A document certifying that has been admitted in the organisation.

D) For subordinate work:
1. Employment contract or promise of employment contract;
2. Statement of the Portuguese Employment and Training Institute (IEFP – Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional) confirming that the employment offer is included in the legal defined quota;
3. Statement that proves the skills to exercise a profession, when regulated in Portugal.

E) For the pursuit of independent professional activity or for enterprising immigrants:
1. Contract of association or proposal of contract to provide services within the independent professions;
2. Document issued by the competent authority stating that the person has the skills to work in national territory;
3. Statement regarding the performance or the intention of performing an operation investment in national territory with economic, social, scientific, technological or cultural relevance;
4. Certificate that the person has made operation investments or has the available financial resources in national territory to do it.
