What is a Short-Term Visa? (for citizens not exempted from visa)
The Short-Term Visa is intended to allow the entry into Portuguese territory for purposes that are accepted by the competent authorities and do not justify the granting of another type of visa.
The Visa can be issued with a validity period of 1 year, one or more entries and cannot exceed 3 months within 6 months from the date of the first crossing in an external frontier.
In duly justified cases, and when it’s proved to be of the interest of the country, may be granted a multiple entry visa to certain categories of people with a validation longer than 1 year but less than 5 years.
What are the documents needed to apply for a Visa Short-Term?
The form must be signed and filled (in case of minors or incapacitated) by their legal tutor.
1. Passport photograph.
2. Authentic and valid travel document for more than 3 months beyond the foreseen exit date (photocopy of the passport and previous visas).
3. Proof of “regular situation” in case of being from a country other than the one where the visa is solicited.
4. Reservation of inbound and outbound flight.
5. Labor-Economic conditions: proof of the employing entity and the salary received in the last 3 months, bank extracts (proof of income) that guarantee the stay and return.
6. Travel Medical Insurance (minimum coverage of 30.000 Euros to cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical attention and/or emergency hospital care or death, during the stay(s) on the territory of the Member States).
7. Hotel reservation (if applicable) or “term of responsibility“. If the stay is with a family member, proof of kinship should be made and it may be solicited the proof of the conditions of accommodation. In case the subscriber of the “term of responsibility” is not Portuguese, he/she should submit legal documental situation in Portugal.
8. Travel authorization for minors or court decision (when applicable).
9. Guaranteed accommodation by family member or by the host, or a hotel reservation.
10. In business trips an invitation shall be presented with the motive of the journey, dates of arrival and departure, as well as the indication of the host with the name of the one responsible for the invitation.
NOTE: The waiting time for uniform visas is usually 15 days since the beginning to the end of the process. The visa applications mentioned above should be done in the presence of the applicant at the Consulate or Embassy.
