Introduction

Spain is a sovereign state and a member of the European Union located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Spanish territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean of the African coast, and two autonomous cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla.

Spain has an extension of approximately 500,000 square kilometres and is one of the most mountainous countries in Europe. It has a population of 47.190.493 million inhabitants, 32% of whom live in cities.

Due to its geographical diversity, Spain has a wide variety of climates.

In terms of the language Spanish is the official idiom of the country. Nevertheless, we also find some co-official languages in some autonomous communities of Spain. Bilingualism is a common practice for many of the people living in those regions.

Spanish Constitution defines the country as a secular state. However, Catholicism is the predominant religion in the country.

Spain is a democracy organized in the form of a parliamentary government under a constitutional monarchy, in which the king (Juan Carlos I) plays the role of head of state and Mariano Rajoy is the actual president.

Spain is one of Europe’s most decentralized countries, as all communities run locally health and education systems, as well as some aspects of the public budget.
